Kortney Darlymple of Hyden Beach

How long have you been in business in Spring Hill?

3 years

What was the first job you ever had?

Sales Associate at The Bon Ton

How has your career path placed you in your current position?

I have been an athlete all of my life and my passion is beach volleyball. My career has been in exercise physiology and sports science. I left my career in sports science to move to the Nashville area in 2019 in search of a new beginning. I kept teaching as a professor in exercise physiology at Belmont University but also started coaching beach volleyball on the side to make extra income. I ran into the owners of Hyden Beach while I was coaching and long story short, they asked me to be the director of their soon-to-be facility built in Spring Hill. This was in late 2019 and in January 2020, I started working full time for Hyden Beach. I don’t have a background in running a small business, but my background and knowledge working with athletes and in a corporate setting has helped prepare me for this role. Hyden Beach is a resource for youth and adult athletics in the community of Spring Hill and the greater Nashville area. We serve our community through youth and adult training, leagues, a resource for company-based team building events, and we bring out-of-towners to our community businesses through running our events.  On any given weekend in the spring and summer, we could have families coming in from 6+ different states to play in our events, which provides funds to our local businesses.

How do you give back to the community through your business?

Hyden Beach specifically runs at least one fundraiser event per year for the community. We host our annual ‘Operation Gratitude’ tournament where we build care packages for our local first responders. We also have held a tournament in 2021 to raise awareness and funds for the Franklin Department of Child Services.

Who is your favorite business mentor or role model?

I need one!

What is your favorite thing to do when not at work?

Play beach volleyball and hang out with my family and friends

What did you want to be when you were a child?

When I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. I have come close with one year of my PhD under my belt but I think that ship has sailed!

Brian Lawrence of Winsight Coaching & Training

How long have you been in business in Spring Hill?

1 year.

What was the first job you ever had?

A merit badge instructor at a Boy Scout camp.

How has your career path placed you in your current position?

The Lord has allowed each role I’ve held over the last 10 years to uniquely position me for the next role. I started in for-profit education sales, which allowed me to work with business owners at Yelp, which allowed me to work as a business coach at Ramsey Solutions, and now I coach and train small business owners. It’s been a fun journey.

How do you give back to the community through your business?

At this stage of business, it’s by supporting local businesses (mainly coffee shops) with my money and continued business. In this next year, I’m hoping to partner with local business owners and help them as they lead their teams and serve the community.

Who is your favorite business mentor or role model?

My favorite business mentor is Patrick Lencioni. His work and emphasis on organizational health, the intentional pursuit of leading teams so there are minimal politics and a strong culture, is the foundation I build on with the work I do.

What is your favorite thing to do when not at work?

Spending time with my wife and four little boys. They are active and are keeping me young!

What is your favorite book?

Currently, my favorite book of this year has been Essentialism by Greg McKeown.
